Goeldi's Monkeys
Callimico goeldii
With its silky black fur, the Goeldi's monkey is a little larger that a squirrel and closely resembles the characteristics of marmosets and tamarins. This monkey was discovered in 1904 and was given the name Callimico which means "beautiful little monkey". Their head is round with hairless ears, usually covered by the hair crown, which is puffed out. Their diet consists of fruits, insects, bird eggs and small vertebrates. Gestation period is 4.5 to 5 months and only one young is born per litter.These monkeys live in the tropical rainforests of the upper Amazon River in South America.Goeldi's Monkeys Information
