A not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for adults age 55+.  The Norfolk Senior Center is committed to helping older adults in South Hampton Roads to remain in their homes with independence, dignity, and opportunities for participating in community life.
Membership is open to anyone age 55 or over.  Annual dues are $18.00/single and $28.00/couple.  Dues partially subsidize the printing and mailing of the monthly newsletter PrimeTime.

Better Service is Here to Stay.  Hampton Roads Transit  and Handi-Ride have changed for the better with a new unified service plan.  The adopted plan adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and will ensure that those who are eligible for service receive it.
The biggest change to Handi-Riders is the part or the plan that strictly adheres to the 3/4 mile service area.  Only trips that originate or drop off within 3/4 mile of an existing fixed route will now be eligible for Handi-Ride.  Call the Handi-Ride Hot-Line at 222-6000 ext.6004 or 6204 if you have any questions.
Another significant change is that reservations may only be made 3 days in advance instead of the previous 14 days.  This is to cut down in the number of "no shows" and late cancellations.  There is no change to next-day service, so if you call by 5 pm the day before you need Handi-Ride, you'll be picked up at your scheduled time the following day.
A re-certification process has also begun and is expected to take about 18 months. If you are a current Handi-Rider you will be required to recertify.  As part of the recertification process, a personal interview (at the HRT office on Monticello Avenue in Norfolk, or on the Peninsula) may be required. If you are found to be no longer eligible, an appeal process has been established as part of the new plan.
New guidelines that strictly adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  will be followed and tests of abilities may be performed in the HRT offices and a system of "conditional" or "trip-by-trip" eligibility may be implemented.  If you have questions or concerns please direct your email comments to  adacomments@hrt.org
Also, you might want to check the US Dept of Justice ADA site.  Good luck!!
