Social Work Services


Adoption Services:

Registries of children available for adoption and families approved to take them are maintained while efforts are made to bring children and families together.


Adult Services:

Services are provided to keep adults in their homes and to assist with out-of-homeplacement when that is appropriate.


Adult Protective Services:

To stop abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation by investigating complaints and providin the protection the adult requires.


Adult Companion Provider Certification:

Individuals who wish to provide home-based care (companion) services to the elderly or to adults with disabilities can apply to become agency certified vendors.


Child Protective Services:

Investigation of valid reports of suspected cases of physical abuse, neglect and sexual abuse of children and coordination of services and resources to prevent recurrence.


Community Resource Program:

Donations of food, clothing, furniture, and household items are gladly accepted and directed (at no charge) to people in need. Or, your monetary donations can be used to send a child to summer camp or help a parent along the way to self-support.


Day Care Services for Children:

Day care is arranged so parents can work or train for employment. Within budgetary constraints, day care can be subsidized for families who qualify. The amount of subsidy is based on household income.


Day Care Provider Certification:

Eligible families in need of day care services are referred to licensed or certified providers. The agency provides certification and training opportunities for Family Day Care Homes.


Emergency Services:

Budget counseling and coordination of community resources to precent eviction and utility cutoff, or to obtain emergency food, shelter, clothing or to purchase medications.


Foster Care Services for Children:

Temporary care is arranged for children who cannot be in their own homes.


Foster Care Provider Certification:

We are looking for committed and caring individuals to become part of the foster care team in providing a stable home environment to children coming from troubled situations. Especially needed are those who are willing to care for sibling groups, teemagers, and infants/toddlers.


Intervention Services for Children and Families:

Services are provided to individuals and families to prevent family violence, family breakdown, child neglect and/or abuse, and other crises as well as strengthening the family's capacity to function independently.


Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals and Organizations:

Put your talents and skills to work helping others. We have various opportunities for you to volunteer with adults, children, families or in the office. Build your resume, make friends, and help make Newport News a better place to live and work.
