Who is a Companion Provider?

Individuals interested in providing home based care to the elderly or disabled can apply to become certified as an independent vendor of companion cervices for customers of the Newport News Social Services. Companion providers are an important part of the team including social workers, nurses and doctors assisting persons to remain at home with appropriate help to meet their needs. Customer's are assisted to live safely, independently and with dignity at home.


What tasks are performed by a Companion Provider?

Tasks performed depend upon the individual needs of the customer. Tasks may include: housekeeping (vacuuming, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, floors, refrigerators), meal preparation, shopping, running errands, personal care and assistance, and companion services.


What process do I have to go through to become an approved agency provider?


What is the rate of pay?

Providers are paid by the Department of Social Services by submitting invoices on a monthly basis. The rate of pay is minimum wage. The independent provider may work part-time or up to 40 hours per week.
