This past November, in celebration of Book Week, noted children's author Johanna Hurwitz spoke at three of the Chesapeake area libraries. At the Central Library, Ms.Hurwitz spoke to second grade students and their teachers in the morning. South Norfolk's regulars were treated to an intimate afternoon conversation with Ms. Hurwitz.
At the Russell Memorial Library Ms. Hurwitz appeared to a standing room only audience of attentive listeners where she talked about her books and motivation for writing. Her stories convinced the audiences that many of her characters were born from close observations of herself, her family and the world in general.
She encouraged listeners to be careful observers of their world, then write their own stories. Ms. Hurwitz was friendly and approachable. Everyone who wished to, left with an autographed copy of her book. What a great way to celebrate National Children's Book Week!
The Chesapeake Public Library system hopes to bring in another children's author during National Children's Book Week, November 18-24, 1996.
