What are the library hours?

Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. To 9:00 p.m.
Friday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. To 5:00 p.m.
Sunday 1:00 p.m. To 5:00 p.m.

How do I get a library card?

A resident of Virginia may apply for a library card at no charge. Applications may be filled out at the Circulation desk at any of the Chesapeake area libraries. Proof of address must be presented at that time. There is no minimum age to apply for a card.

What if I forget or lose my library card?

If a patron has forgotten the library card, materials may be checked out with another form of identification. After the third time a patron forgets the card, staff will request that the patron obtain a new card. A $1.00 replacement fee will be charged for lost or stolen cards.

How do I renew materials?

Materials may be renewed in person at any Chesapeake area library or by phone at 382-6576.

What are the fines for overdue materials?

Adult and juvenile books and books on tape $.10/day
Bestsellers $.25/day
Interlibrary loan materials $.50/day
Videos $1.00/day

The maximum fine for overdue materials is$ 6.00 per item. The maximum fine for videos is $10.00 per item. There is no maximum fine for overdue interlibrary loan materials.

How many books, videos and CDs may I check out at one time?

A maximum of 50 items may be checked out per library card. Patrons are limited to three books per author and three in any subject area.

Where may I return materials?

Materials may be returned at any of the Chesapeake area libraries. All libraries have book drops for returning items after operating hours. Videos must be returned inside the libraries. If videos are left in the book drop, a $1.00 fine will be charged.




May I register to vote at the library?

Voter registration is available at all Chesapeake Library locations during regular operating hours. Inquiries on eligibility requirements and absentee ballots can be determined by calling the Office of the Registrar at 547-6141.
